First and Only Geeky Post

I’m taking my little eeePC laptop overseas with me. For those of you who don’t know what it is, it’s a laptop about the size of your average hardcover book. It’s got wireless and runs linux, so it should be easy to jump on the net anywhere I can get a signal.

One of my concerns is using dodgy internet connections overseas. Thankfully with SSH and a remote server, I’d now be confident doing Internet Banking on a dodgy internet connection in Vietnam, with there being no chance of them sniffing network traffic unless they’re hiding a super computer out the back.

The whole process is fairly simple. A SSH connection to a remote server:

ssh -fND localhost:8080 my.remote.server.net

and then simply changing the settings in firefox to tunnel through this connection. The whole thing took me less than 5 minutes to get working, and should mean 100% secure net and email access no matter where we are.
